The two final texts of Cuban writer Reinaldo Arenas, his autobiography Antes que anochezca and his novel El color del verano, are both texts that propose a dissident reading. Their literary genre, the autobiography and the novel, respectively, support this subversive goal. Arenas forges an autobiographical contract with the reader in Antes que anochezca, guiding the reading through the genre, homosexual eroticism, and suicide, in order to achieve a final "vengeance" against Fidel Castro. Meanwhile, the self-consciousness of its genre allows El color del verano to tread a similarly dissident line. The friction between its fiction and historical intent, the triple narrator, and homosexual eroticism construct from the form of the novel itself a "furious," and dissident, text.
