    Abstract

This sociology thesis explores the societal implications of technology through a gendered analysis of social media sites Pinterest and Reddit. Through interviews and focus groups on the two sites, it is concluded that the ways in which different genders use and view the two sites serves to establish and reinforce existing gender norms, specifically so that women are defined only in relation to their status as Woman whereas men have more autonomy to form their own identities. This paper also discusses the commodification of women throughout history, the rise of the Internet and how it is male dominated, and sociological theorists De Beavoir and Butler (feminist theory), Goffman, and Foucault.
